What is “the Flat Top Show”?

“The Flat Top Show” is a 90-minute live presentation designed for aspiring musicians, music professors, and anyone on the path of creative awakening. Part performance, part ontological coaching session, part experimental ceremony, this is not just a show. It is the unveiling of a human experiment nearly 50 years in the making.

Created and conducted by M. Jack Plane (aka Flats), “The Flat Top Show” draws from a lifetime of inner research—beginning in 1975 at age 16—into the mysteries of creative blocks, emotional repression, and metaphysical trauma. It unveils how music can save a soul that is stuck.

The Core Premise:

There is a way to actualize genius without selling out the soul.
And that way involves story.

Through a sequence of short autobiographical stories embedded with hypnotic cues and ontological principles, Flats guides the audience gently through a collective journey of inner re-connection. The stories are told with emotional vulnerability, humor, and frequent tears, not as performance devices, but as the authentic signs of one who choses to live wide open.

Slides accompany the performance. Photos from childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood help the audience tune into the soul of the speaker—so they can remember their own. Album covers from the golden era of songwriting (1966–1975) are included, inviting a musical resonance that is deeply nostalgic yet spiritually charged.

Each story touches on a wound, a breakthrough, or an insight—an emotional node that unlocks self-reflection in the listener. These stories are emotionally vivid, ontologically precise episodes designed to take the audience somewhere unexpected: back to a younger self, forward to a more awakened one, or sideways into a plane of perception that was gathering dust.

The Structure:

• Introduction to the speaker, with musical influences and metaphysical background
• Visuals: personal photos and albums that shaped the soul
• 3–5 emotionally charged stories, each carrying an ontological principle
• Humor throughout to disarm resistance and promote state change
• Hypnotic language woven lightly into the narrative (not overt trance induction)
• Invitation to remember younger emotional states (pre- age 10)
• Final reflection on creative sovereignty and the soul’s path

The ultimate aim of “The Flat Top Show” is to demonstrate a possibility—that a human being, untrained in stagecraft but deeply trained in soul craft, can move a room of musicians to tears, laughter, and new self-perception, without spectacle, without ego, and without compromise.
If this experiment succeeds, and the synergy of light trance, storytelling, humor, and emotional resonance reaches its full potential, the format may one day be recognized by a new name:

Initiation Theater

Not as a brand. Not as a genre. But as an earned description. A compliment Flats would be honored to receive.
And one final note: This 90-minute show is also a call for allies:

  • For those in the room who feel the current.
  • For the professor who sees the curriculum gap.
  • For the bandleader who recognizes a frontman.
  • For anyone who has ever longed for a concept album that could surpass the classics.

This isn’t nostalgia. This is the next movement. And you’re invited to help make it real.
